Piedmont Presbyterian Church

How We Got Here

Our roots run deep in Piedmont. This congregation, founded on May 18, 1880, was one of the first to be organized in Piedmont. In its early years, the church held services in the Union Church Building constructed by Piedmont Manufacturing Company. Three churches, the Baptists, the Methodists, and the Presbyterians shared the building for several years, until such time as each was able to build its own place of worship. This cooperative spirit lives on in our congregation. The Presbyterians were the last to leave the Union Church Building, erecting their own building between 1893 and 1894, so we became custodians of the church bell. This historic bell, which has called people to worship since those early days, still sounds every Sunday at the beginning of our service. Since the Baptists and Methodists had built on the Greenville County side, it was deemed expedient to locate the Presbyterian Church in the new part of town, across the Saluda River in Anderson County. Our present sanctuary-educational building was constructed on the site formerly occupied by Beattie Memorial School on Academy Street. Groundbreaking ceremonies were held on Mother’s Day, 1964, and the first services were held on December 20,1964.

Building and Property

Our congregation is blessed to worship in a beautiful facility surrounded by a picturesque park and wooded areas.  We have educational space for both adults and children, a large fellowship hall (McCarter Hall) and full kitchen, and a full-size gym (Gresham Hall). Nestled among the trees we also have a covered outdoor worship area in which we annually host an Easter sunrise service.  We have a walking trail, which was constructed by the Boy Scout Troop which meets at our church, and a softball field.  Both the softball field and Gresham Hall are available for reservation.
